- PONDICHERRY INDEPENDENCE -
Pondicherry, a former French colony in India, remained under French control even after India gained independence from Britain in 1947.
Although negotiations began for the annexation of the French Establishments in India (Pondicherry, Karikal, Mahé and Yanaon), it was not until 1954 that the final agreement was signed.
A local referendum and diplomatic negotiations enabled Pondicherry and the other territories to officially become part of India on November 1, 1954.
However, this attachment was not formalized until 1962, when France and India signed a treaty.
Today, Pondicherry retains a strong French influence in its architecture, culture and even language, making it a unique place in India, with a history rich in diversity and cooperation. 🇫🇷🇮🇳
